I am a communications manager for Global Fishing Watch, where I support their research, technology and data products.
Previously, I served as assistant director of communications and outreach for Maryland Sea Grant, which included overseeing Chesapeake Quarterly magazine. I have also served as University of Delaware’s research multimedia specialist for their Office of Communications and Marketing, social media community manager and editor for the National Marine Educators Association, and as digital outreach specialist for UD's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and the Delaware Sea Grant College Program. I have also written and photographed magazine articles for Gannett's Delmarva Media Group.
I have completed master’s degrees in educational technology at University of Delaware, studying using emerging technologies in education with a focus on science storytelling, and in multiplatform journalism from the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism. As part of that coursework, I covered the biotechnology and gene research beats and did general assignment reporting for Maryland Newsline, an online publication that was part of the school's new media lab. My work has been carried by over 25 outlets, including Newsweek, The Baltimore Sun, The Miami Herald, The Kansas City Star, FOX News, and Science Communication.
I currently live near the Atlantic coast in Berlin, Maryland, and spend my free time traveling, hiking, beachcombing, kayaking, and riding with my husband, artist Matthew Amey, three rescue dogs and two horses. Matthew and I also collaborate through our art studio and family cooperative, Wooden Octopus.
